Vol. #10   Intestinal Parasites: Unsavory Characters
January 2007

People often think that parasites can only be acquired in foreign countries or via extenuating circumstance, in reality, parasites are rather common and we can easily be infected by them. They can at times result from poor hygiene, but even if your household and personal hygiene are impeccable, parasites can be caused by contact with animals, poorly cooked meat, or produce that is not thoroughly washed. They can also come from contaminated water and even through oral sexual contact with an infected partner.            Intestinal parasites are parasites that populate the gastro-intestinal tract. The major groups of parasites are protozoans (organisms with one cell) and parasitic worms (helminths). Each of these parasites can infect the digestive tract, and sometimes two or more can infect the gastro-intestinal tract simultaneously. Once contact occurs, the parasites move to the intestinal tract where they will reproduce and symptoms will begin to appear.

Symptoms differ from person to person; sometimes intestinal parasites will not even cause any symptoms, or symptoms will come and go. Some of the better known signs include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, or diarrhea. More serious infections will have more serious symptoms such and nausea, fever, and skin-itching. The symptoms most of us would not associate with a parasitic infection include anemia, hair loss, and even cancer. The truth is, most of us have parasites, but the infection might not be serious enough to warrant any symptoms. Yet knowing about the more serious problems it can cause, one cannot help but feel that it might be time to do something about it.

One way to rid yourself of parasites is to do a detoxification program, this can ideally be done by combining a detox diet with the right supplements, or if the diet is not feasible, the right mix of supplements can do the trick.  There are also some highly effective homeopathic remedies for intestinal parasites that will have you feeling better in no time. You can always come in and talk to us about your symptoms and we would be happy to assist you in finding the detox program that is right for you. For future prevention remember to always cook meat properly and wash vegetables thoroughly with an all natural vegetable wash because water is not enough. Pay close attention to any changes you might feel in your digestion and come talk to us, because there’s no need to put up with these unsavory characters!
